Occupational contact dermatitis remains a prevalent health issue among batik workers due to repeated exposure to irritants and allergens, particularly from dyes and chemical fixatives. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and the application of an emulsion-based formula in preventing occupational contact dermatitis among batik artisans in Muaro Jambi. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed involving 60 batik workers divided into four groups: control, PPE only, emulsion only, and PPE with emulsion. The incidence and severity of contact dermatitis were assessed using the Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI) and patch testing over a 4-week period. Results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in dermatitis symptoms in the PPE and emulsion combination group compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The use of both PPE and emulsion provided synergistic protection against irritant exposure and improved skin barrier function. This study underscores the importance of integrated preventive strategies combining physical barriers and topical protectants to reduce occupational dermatoses in traditional industries.
